Thorens - TD 403 DD Direct Drive Turntable with 2M Blue Cartridge

Thorens’ entry into direct drive: no belt to stretch, an Ortofon 2M Blue fitted and aligned at the factory, and the TP 150 arm with adjustable VTA, azimuth and a ruby-bearing anti-skate.

A belt is a consumable that quietly degrades speed stability for months before anyone notices. Direct drive removes it: the platter sits on the motor spindle and there is nothing between the two to stretch, slip or perish. The TD 403 DD is where Thorens does that for the least money, using a 24V DC motor with electronic control and a published speed deviation of ±0.33%.

The Ortofon 2M Blue fitted to the arm is Thorens’ own factory fitment, not a bundle we assembled — their product page says it comes factory-fitted and precisely adjusted. It is a nude elliptical moving magnet at 5.5mV, which means any MM phono input will run it happily. There is no phono stage built into the deck, so you will need one: an input on your amplifier, or a separate box. We sell plenty.

The tonearm is the TP 150, a nine-inch static-balance J-shape with 232.8mm effective length and 17.8mm overhang. What lifts it above the usual entry-level arm is that it adjusts: VTA and azimuth are both adjustable, the headshell detaches on a standard SME connector, and anti-skate is applied by a weight on a nylon thread running over a ruby bearing rather than by a spring. It accepts cartridges up to 30g, so the deck grows with you.

This is a fully manual turntable. There is no auto-stop and no lift — Thorens’ datasheet says so plainly. Pressing stop switches the motor off; the arm stays where you left it.

Two of Thorens’ own documents disagree about how much this turntable weighs. The product page and datasheet both say 7.2kg; the owner’s manual says 9.7kg. We are reporting both rather than choosing for them.
