Thorens - TPN 124 Linear Power Supply

The linear power supply Thorens developed for the TD 124 DD, sold separately as the upgrade path for the TD 404 DD — a ring-core toroidal transformer instead of a switching brick.

Every direct-drive turntable is, electrically, a motor controller sitting a few centimetres from a cartridge generating a fraction of a millivolt. The supply feeding that controller matters, and the small switching adapter that ships with most decks generates high-frequency noise as an unavoidable by-product of how switching supplies work.

The TPN 124 replaces it with a linear supply built around a ring-core toroidal transformer. A toroid’s winding geometry confines its magnetic field far better than a conventional laminated core, which is exactly what you want near a phono cartridge, and a linear supply has no switching frequency to leak in the first place. Thorens’ own description is that it guarantees a particularly clean and stable supply.

Which turntable you have decides whether this is an upgrade or a spare. On the TD 124 DD and the TD 124 DD Exclusive the TPN 124 is the standard power supply and is included in the box — if you own one of those, this is a replacement or a second unit. On the TD 404 DD it is an option, sold separately, replacing the standard 24V supply. Thorens makes no claim about the TD 403 DD, and we would not fit one without asking them first.

Being straight about the specification: Thorens does not host a dedicated TPN 124 page. The transformer type and the dual 24V and 5V outputs come from an authorised German Thorens retailer rather than from Thorens themselves, and output current, connector type, dimensions and weight are not published anywhere we could find. Tell us which turntable you have and we will confirm fitment with the distributor before shipping.
